Fatima Amiri
Summer Student
My legal career began in Iran, where I practiced family law for more than a decade. I hold a Ph.D. in International Law from the University of Tehran and bring a deep understanding of Iranian law, family law processes, legal rights, and the cultural realities that often shape family disputes.
For many Iranian Canadian families, separation is not experienced only through the Canadian legal system. It may also involve international issues, marriage or divorce documents from Iran, property or financial matters connected to another country, and the emotional difficulty of navigating a legal system that feels unfamiliar. My background allows me to recognize those layers and approach them with care, respect, and cultural fluency.
After moving to Canada, I previously held a Foreign Legal Consultant Permit from the Law Society of Ontario, which permitted me to provide legal advice in Ontario on matters involving Iranian law. That experience reflected my knowledge of Iranian legal rights and processes and deepened my understanding of how family law issues can move across borders, cultures, and court systems.
I also gained practical experience in the Canadian legal system while working in a criminal law firm. That experience gave me further insight into the pressure clients can feel when they are navigating an unfamiliar legal process, particularly when the stakes are personal and the outcome matters deeply.
I later completed my second LL.M. in Canadian Common Law at York University through the National Committee on Accreditation process. I am now continuing my Canadian legal training as a Summer Student, assisting the firm’s lawyers with family law files, legal research, document preparation, and client-related work under their supervision.
I am fluent in English and Farsi. I value being part of a team that helps clients feel understood across languages, cultures, and legal systems, while receiving clear guidance within the Canadian family law framework.
Outside of law, I enjoy staying connected to the Iranian Canadian community and continuing to learn from the people and experiences that have shaped my legal journey across two countries.
